July 3, 2012/ UNESCO Havana/Portal of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean

Issue No.7 of the magazine Culture and Development, which has been published by the UNESCO Regional Office of Culture for Latin America and the Caribbean since 2000, is already on-line.

In the foreword to this issue, Mr. Herman van Hooff, Director of the Regional Office highlights the assertion that “the present issue summarizes some of UNESCO’s experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean from the perspective of the contribution of culture to a comprehensive development of both people and communities. On the one hand, as a sector of economic activity that generates employment and income and on the other, as a transversal factor of cultural approach to health, environment sustainability, food, education, equality or social cohesion.”

In this issue the reader will find diverse UNESCO projects such as the UNESCO Culture for Development Suite for Development Indicators: a tool to integrate culture into development strategies, the Qhapaq Ñan, the road of Andean development as well as regional projects such as Cameras of Diversity, the SIDACULT network, various projects on Culture for Development in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase, or the support provided to the training of filmmakers at the International School of and TV School of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba.

Furthermore, issue No. 7 presents several community-based projects implemented in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba, which focus on the role of culture in social cohesion and the protection of the environment, articles on the role of culture role in post-conflict situations as The New Foundation of Haiti, or the underwater cultural heritage and the possibilities of its contribution to development and others that assess the multidimensional relationship between these two concepts.
